If you buy aloe vera gel at Walmart, CVS, or Target, be aware that this product does not contain aloe vera extract.
According to the report BloombergA few laboratory tests of aloe vera gel from Walmart, Target, and CVS showed no trace of aloe vera, even though the juice of this plant is listed as the first or second ingredient in each case.
Instead, the samples included a cheaper additive called maltodextrin, which is essentially a sugar made from starch.
It is often used as a substitute for aloe, and can also be found in Jello and Splenda.
Bloomberg gave 4 aloe vera sample to the lab for testing.
Among them were:
— Walmart's Equate Aloe After Sun Gel – after-sun gel with aloe vera;
— CVS' Aftersun Aloe Vera Moisturizing Gel – moisturizing gel with aloe vera;
— Target's Up & Up Aloe Vera Gel – gel with aloe vera;
— Walgreens Alcohol Free Aloe Vera Body Gel – a moisturizing gel with aloe vera without alcohol.
The results showed that 3 chemical compound aloe was absent in Walmart, CVS and Target.
The Walgreens sample consisted of only one compound, which suggests that the presence of aloe in products can neither be confirmed nor excluded.
The Food and Drug Administration does not test cosmetics before it reaches supermarket shelves and consumers.
A Walmart spokesperson said it "believes its suppliers are held to high standards and are committed to providing customers with high-quality products." “We have been in contact with our suppliers and they assure us of the authenticity of their products,” he added.
“The quality, safety and integrity of our products are our highest priority, and we carefully select suppliers who share these priorities,” a Walgreens spokesperson said. “Our supplier has assured us that the product's ingredients correspond to its labeling.”
Target and CVS 'have not yet commented on these studies.
