Antibacterial soap will soon disappear from sale in the US

Antibacterial soap will soon disappear from the shelves of stores at the request of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to the fact that it is no different from ordinary soap.

Products containing one of 19 antibacterial ingredients—the most popular of which are triclosan and triclocarban—must change their name or disappear from store shelves within a year, the FDA says.

Hand sanitizers and wipes containing more than 50% alcohol do not fall under the new rules, nor are cleaning products in hospitals and nursing homes.

Brands such as Johnson & Johnson and Proctor & Gamble have already announced plans to remove triclosan from their commercially available products. Triclosan and 18 other ingredients are found in over 2100 products, or about 40% of the soap on the market.

The use of cleaners with the specified ingredients 19 can lead to the fact that the bacteria get used, and the process of further struggle with them is difficult. Very important is the fact that the presence of these ingredients can also affect hormones.

An FDA spokeswoman stressed that washing hands with ordinary soap under running water is the most effective way to avoid getting sick and spreading germs.

Also, the FDA has allowed those products that contain these 3 components to remain on the market: benzalkonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, and chloroxylenol. Manufacturers of products with these 3 ingredients must provide information on their safety by February 2017.
