Florida authorities hand out fake welfare pamphlets to immigrants

According to the class-action lawsuit, Florida officials and agencies used several tactics to lure migrants on a charter flight to Martha's Vineyard, including producing a fake pamphlet that claimed refugee benefits. Insider.

On September 14, 50 migrants, most of them from Venezuela, were delivered on two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. It was a political stunt by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to criticize the Biden administration's border policies.

Now a group of these migrants are taking action against DeSantis, as well as other government officials and agencies, in a class action lawsuit filed September 20. Lawyers representing migrants accused DeSantis and Florida officials of conspiring with an "illegal scheme" to "deceive vulnerable immigrants to advance political causes."

According to the lawsuit, part of this "scheme" involved making "false promises and false claims" about potential jobs and housing upon arrival at Martha's Vineyard.

For example, shortly before arriving on the island, migrants were given a "shiny red folder" filled with "official-looking materials," including a pamphlet called "Massachusetts Refugee Benefits."

The brochure contained misleading information about resettlement assistance that was not actually available to migrants seeking asylum in Massachusetts.

The lawsuit accuses DeSantis and other officials of completely fabricating the flyer.

“According to information and belief, the pamphlet was produced by the defendants,” the lawsuit says, and it “resonates with the type of misrepresentation” the migrants were told about. For example, housing, food, and employment assistance for the first 90 days after arriving in Massachusetts.
