Glushkov was an associate of the oligarch Boris Berezovsky. From 1989, he worked first as head of the department and then as deputy general director of the LogoVAZ joint venture created by Berezovsky. In 1991, he joined AvtoVAZ, and in 1996, he became deputy director of Aeroflot.

In this post, Glushkov became the person involved in the case of large-scale embezzlement of airline funds. As the investigators established, Berezovsky was able to lead in the company management people close to him, including Glushkov. After that, using connections, he began withdrawing funds from Aeroflot accounts. Most of the airline’s foreign exchange earnings were transferred to a Swiss company. Andava, the shares of which belonged to Berezovsky and Glushkov himself. In addition, Aeroflot regularly took loans from a Swiss company Forus, which was also controlled by Berezovsky. From 1996 to 1999, more than $ 900 million passed through these two firms, a significant portion of these funds was stolen.

In the 1999 year, after the establishment of the fact of fraud, the investigators opened a criminal case, Berezovsky, Glushkov and another deputy director of Aeroflot Alexander Krasnenker became his defendants. However, later the prosecutor's office re-qualified Berezovsky from the suspect to the witnesses. Nikolay Glushkov, in turn, was arrested and placed in a pre-trial detention center. Nikolai Glushkov was also charged with escaping from the hospital where he was in custody. The court acquitted Glushkov on charges of embezzlement and legalization of funds. However, he was sentenced to three years and three months of imprisonment for the abuse of official authority.

In view of the time already served, he was released in the courtroom. Moscow City Court did not agree with this decision of the Savelovsky court and sent the case for a new consideration. In 2006, the Savelovsky court decided to stop criminal prosecution for the non-return of foreign currency earnings due to the expiration of the statute of limitations, and on the remaining articles Glushkov was sentenced to two years in prison conditionally. In the 2010 year, Glushkov, as well as Berezovsky, received political asylum in the UK. Meanwhile, in Russia, a criminal case was opened against him again. In March, 2017, in Moscow, he was convicted in absentia by 8 years of imprisonment for embezzlement amounting to $ 123 million from Aeroflot.
