Suspected in distribution of the Petya virus detained in Ukraine

Ukrainian law enforcement officers detained a 51-year resident of Nikopol, Dnepropetrovsk region, on suspicion of spreading a virus Petya.A.

An attacker who downloaded free videos about the virus and distributed malicious programs to the Internet was installed by operatives of the anti-cybercrime department in the Chernihiv region.

The video he uploads to the network contained a detailed description of how the virus could be launched. Petya.A on computers. In the comments to the video, he posted a link to his page on the social network where the virus itself was downloaded. From this page, he also sent the virus to other users.

During the search, investigators seized computer equipment from which the virus was distributed. Malicious software files were found in which computer security specialists identified the virus Petya.A. The withdrawn equipment is directed on additional examination.

The detainee explained to the police that after the hacker attack in June 2017, he uploaded the virus to the file sharing service, and posted links to the file on his blog. This virus, according to the investigation, network users downloaded about 400 times, infecting them with their computers.

Militiamen also found out that several Ukrainian companies had deliberately launched a virus in order to conceal criminal activity and avoid possible fines.

A criminal case has been initiated into the incident under Part 1 of Art. 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“Unauthorized interference with the operation of electronic computers”). Nikopol faces up to 6 years in prison.

Virus attack Petya started on june jun. The first to suffer from it were Russian and Ukrainian oil, telecommunications and financial companies. According to preliminary estimates of the company Group-IB, the virus attacked about 80 companies, most of which were Ukrainian.
