In Ukraine, introduced the penalty for St. George ribbon

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted to adopt a bill banning the use and production of the St. George ribbon. Now it faces a penalty - from a fine to administrative arrest.

The fine for using, displaying or wearing a St. George ribbon is up to $96 in national currency equivalent. The confiscation of the ribbon and the items on which it is depicted is also provided. The fine doubles if the law is violated again. There is also the possibility of administrative arrest for up to 15 days.

The law “On Amendments to the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offences, on the prohibition of the production and propaganda of the St. George (Guards) Ribbon” was supported by 238 of the 338 people’s deputies present.

“The so-called St. George’s ribbon has long been a symbol of Russian aggression” and is used “to split the Ukrainian nation, the Ukrainian people,” said the author of the bill, deputy from the Popular Front faction Anton Gerashchenko.

The law is expected to be signed by the President of Ukraine. Only after this and publication, it will enter into force.

The last few years, St. George ribbon has become the main symbol of the celebration of Victory Day in Russia. In Ukraine, it is associated with Russian aggression.
