In the school of Manhattan open classes with teaching in Russian

For the first time, classes in Russian are being opened in the city school of Manhattan. Since the new school year in elementary school number 145 in the area of ​​Columbia University (Upper West Side) a program is being launched in which all teaching will be carried out in two languages ​​- children will study general education subjects in Russian for half a day, and in English for half a day. At the same time, classes are staffed with both Russian-speaking children and English-speaking Americans.

As explained ForumDaily Olga Ilyashenko is one of the initiators of the creation of a new program - in September of this year, a preparatory class ("kindergarten") will open its doors to those interested, and then a new class will be added every year - until the last, fifth year of study. It is planned to teach 24 people in each class - 12 Russian-speaking and 12 English-speaking children.

“Most parents who want to enroll their children in such programs are mixed families, where one spouse speaks Russian and the other is Native American,” Ilyashenko noted. “Parents want their children not to forget the Russian language, to read literature in the original, to write and speak Russian well, to know the culture and traditions.”

As emphasized in conversation with ForumDaily another organizer of the program is Yulia Stoyanovich, "the curriculum is developed specifically for new classes in accordance with the general educational standards of the city of New York." According to her, the program was created with the support of the Government of New York and exclusively by the diaspora from Russia and other countries of the former USSR, in full autonomy and without the participation of any Russian organizations.

Teachers who will lead classes in the classrooms are fluent in two languages, know and love Russian culture and classical literature.

Currently, a similar school exists in New York only in Brooklyn, where a large Russian-speaking diaspora lives, but the queue for training there exceeds 400 people. The city also has numerous schools teaching in Spanish, several French and one German school, where instruction is conducted in two languages.

Parents of future students would also like to organize after classes various extra classes (“extension”), including music, drawing, singing, and chess. However, at present, the launch of the entire bilingual classes program is still in the finalization stage, and therefore parents who want their children to study in new classes are waiting at the June 1 parent meeting.
