Russia responded to the possibility of the appearance of Nemtsov Square in Washington

The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the decision of the Washington authorities to call the wasteland in front of the embassy of our country, where a homeless shelter may appear, in honor of the murdered oppositionist.

This was stated by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Maria Zakharova on the program “Stories of the day” on the TV channel RBC.

“It’s a pity that the representatives of the so-called political elites use the name of the Russian politician who was one of the brightest representatives of the political elite of Russia, they simply manipulate him,” Zakharova said.

The US Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs 17 May approved a bill that suggests calling square opposite the Russian embassy in Washington "Boris Nemtsov Plaza" (Boris Nemtsov Plaza). The name can get Square in the borders of Wisconsin Avenue, Edmunds Street and Davis Street. The initiator of the bill was the US Senator from the State of Florida Marco Rubio.

“The creation of Boris Nemtsov Square will constantly remind Putin’s regime and the Russian people that the voices of these dissidents are still alive and that the defenders of freedom will not shut up,” Rubio said in a statement.

After the approval of the bill, Zakharova said that this space is not built up now. According to her, the city authorities informed the Russian Embassy that a homeless shelter could appear at this place.

“Why do so with the name of this person? Either it is the stupidity of those political forces that make such decisions in the USA, or it is some kind of hellish cynicism, ”said Zakharova (quoted by“ Interfax ”).

She said that one could have a different attitude to the life of Nemtsov, but one can not ignore the fact that he held a high-ranking post in Russia. “Apparently, they think so, they wanted to make it more painful to Russia, but they showed such disastrous stupidity and ignorance not even of our own, but of their own realities, which is nowhere else,” the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman added.

Boris Nemtsov was deputy prime minister of the Russian government in 1997 – 1998, and also served as governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region. From 2013 to 2015, he was a member of the Yaroslavl Regional Duma.
