NYPD ignored more 1500 requests from Immigration
NYPD ignored all 1526 requests from Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal immigrants for up to 48 hours last year, said a spokesman for the New York Police Department on Wednesday. He writes about it Fox News.
The Daily News reported that Oleg Chernyavsky, the legislative director of the New York Police Department, showed the number of requests at a city council meeting.
It is noted that the number of requests for 2017 year was almost 20 times higher than the 80 received in the previous year. Cherniavsky said that the department responded only to two ICE requests for 2016 a year, since these immigrants had federal arrest warrants.
In accordance with New York law, prisoners can only be transferred to ICE if they have been convicted of one of the 170 crimes, and federal officials filed a warrant.
Cherniavsky said that the police’s response to ICE requests "speaks of our intentions as a city ... It is important that victims of crimes, regardless of their immigration status, trust the police."
