Summer lottery for young people starts in New York

The New York Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) announced the opening of the 2017 Summer Employment Youth Program (SYEP). Thus, residents of a city between the ages of 14 and 24 can apply for participation in the SYEP lottery.

The selection starts on February 6 and ends on March 17 of the year 2017. Participants are selected by lottery, which will be held from July 5 to August 19, according to the release that is available to the editors of ForumDaily.

“Each year, we give students more and more chances to secure internships that will help change their career trajectories. Last year, tens of thousands of young New Yorkers began their futures in more than 10 jobs across the city. This year, we will engage even more young people in all 5 boroughs,” said Mayor De Blasio.

SYEP is the largest summer youth employment initiative in the country. Since 1963, this program was first launched in New York. Young people from 14 to 24 take part in it. They work up to 6 weeks, gaining initial experience on construction sites in all 5 areas of the city.

Last summer, a city record was recorded - 60 113 program participants who worked on more than 10 thousands of work sites.

In addition, members of SYEP work in public institutions, hospitals, summer camps, non-profit organizations, museums, and not only.

Research shows that SYEP improves school attendance, offers new skills, reduces the level of people deprived of their liberty, and keeps adolescents safe, including young people who do not have access to paid work.
