New York refuses to pay for Trump's safety
The mayor of New York is outraged by the decision of Congress that the city should pay a bill of $ 35 million for the protection of President-elect Trump and his family on 5-th Avenue, writes NBC News.
Earlier, Congress issued a detailed financial plan until April 2017, inclusive. The proposed bill allocates only $ 7 million to federal reimbursement of expenses incurred by the New York City Police Department to protect the elected president. Voting on this bill will begin on Thursday and last until the end of the week.
In his Twitter, the mayor said that the bill would cover only 20% of the estimated cost of security costs, adding that it would put additional burden on taxpayers in New York.
“This is a national responsibility and the burden cannot fall solely on our city and police department,” the statement read.
On Monday, de Blasio sent a letter to Congress and the White House with a request to reimburse the city taxpayers for an account of $ 35 million for the protection of President-elect Trump and his family from the date of 8 election on November 2017 and before taking office in January 2017.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) estimates the defense of the newly elected president and his family at the Trump Tower, in Manhattan, at $ 1 million per day.
“The costs associated with protecting it in the middle of a city that is home to 8,55 million residents are logistically complex and require significant effort and resources,” De Blasio wrote.
Previously, almost 100 thousands of taxpayers have signed a petition requiring Melanie Trump to collect her designer bags and leave New York. The petition became popular after the news that the next US first lady intends to stay in the city until her son finishes the school year. “Taxes should be used to improve the city and all residents, not just one person,” the petition writes.
