In Michigan, restaurant owners refused to let ICE agents

ICE officers are increasingly raiding the restaurant industry, but restaurateurs are beginning to take bold action.

Thus, a husband and wife who own a cafe in Ann Arbor, Michigan, did not let ICE armed agents into the kitchen of their restaurant.

Alan Zakalik said that two representatives of immigration authorities entered the cafe Zola around 2 hours of the day and asked about one of their workers. When it became clear that they had to go to the kitchen to arrest the man, Zakaiq’s wife, Khediy Batu, did not allow them to do so.

It was reported that the agents were in the form with the inscription Police and armed. “They looked pretty well stocked,” Zakalik said.

Despite the fact that the restaurant was not full of visitors that day, there was still excitement among customers. The owner believes that in this way the officers intimidate both the employees and the clients of the establishment.

An ICE spokesperson, in turn, said that the incident was simply "part of the daily daily targeted operations conducted by ICE in this region and throughout the country." He clarified that there were no arrests, and the officers left after Batu did not allow them to enter the kitchen.

Recall that it was in Ann Arbor that the ICE officers had breakfast in May of this year, after which they arrested three cafe workers. Later it turned out that all three had documents. According to the owner of the restaurant, the officers had breakfast for two days at his establishment, praised the chef, and then went to the kitchen to detain employees.
