The so-called “Supreme Court of Crimea” made a decision to recognize the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as an extremist organization and banned its activities.

The decision may be appealed within a month.

The statement of claim by the pseudo-prosecutor of Crimea Natalya Poklonskaya said that the Mejlis is set “exclusively on anti-Russian activities, and its leaders Refat Chubarov and Mustafa Dzhemilev are puppets in the hands of big Western puppeteers, and the Crimean Tatar people are used as bargaining chips.”

Earlier, the US State Department called on Russia to cancel the decisions of the Russian Ministry of Justice on the recognition of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people as an extremist organization. The United States stressed that the Russian authorities have no right to extend their legislation to Crimea, which is part of another state.

On April 13, the “prosecutor” of the annexed Crimea, Natalya Poklonskaya, made a decision to suspend the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatars. After that, she stated that the prosecutor’s office of the annexed peninsula allegedly receives numerous complaints from Crimean Tatars about the complete inactivity of the Mejlis.

In turn, on April 18, the Russian Ministry of Justice included the Mejlis in the list of organizations whose activities have been suspended due to “extremism.”

The plenipotentiary of the President of Ukraine for the affairs of the Crimean Tatar people Mustafa Dzhemilev, speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council on Crimea, said that the injunction of the Mejlis in Crimea would be regarded as a declaration of war on the Crimean Tatars by the occupation authorities.

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called the ban of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people a violation of basic human rights and freedoms.
