In Cape Verde, on a Russian ship, 10 tons of cocaine were seized and the crew was arrested

Cape Verde police seized nearly 10 tons of cocaine and arrested 11 crew members of a Russian merchant ship moored in the capital’s port of Praia. According to a local police report on Friday, this is the largest confiscated shipment of drugs in the history of the country.

The authorities of Cape Verde, an island nation that is located off the west coast of Africa, have been fighting for a long time against drug cartels using the country to transport Latin American cocaine to Europe, writes Voice of America.

9,5 tons of cocaine were removed from the ship, which was heading from South America to Morocco. The ship moored in the port of Praia in connection with the death of one of the crew members, the police said.

The photographs published on Friday show dozens of plastic packages, inside which police found cocaine.

The police reported that a signal on the transport of drugs on board the ship came from the operational-analytical center, which coordinates the fight against drug smuggling in seven states of the European Union. The experts of the center expressed suspicions that drugs were being transported on board the ship.

All 11 arrested crew members are citizens of the Russian Federation.
