On Wednesday afternoon, gas exploded in the center of San Francisco, causing a massive fire at the scene.

Firefighters kept the fire under control as two teams from the gas company PG&E manually excavated the street in an attempt to shut off gas pipelines. Hours after the blast was reported, officials reported that PG&E employees were finally able to shut off the gas lines.

PG&E spokesman Paul Doherty declined to comment on the accident and the investigation, saying the investigation was too early to comment.

Residents of the city are asked to avoid the area where the accident occurred. The mayor of London Breed reported that firefighters, police and the San Francisco Department of Emergency Situations are at the scene of the explosion and fire.
