The legendary restaurant reopens in New York City’s Central Park.

Last weekend in Central Park, the legendary restaurant reopened its doors for visitors, which has been standing closed for the past five years.

The institution called Tavern on the Green is located in the western part of the park, between West 66 Street and West 67 Street. In Russian, it is called “Green Tavern” or “Tavern on the lawn” in various sources.

The Tavern first opened in 1934, and for several decades it was very popular in New York. The restaurant had several rooms, the most famous of which was the Crystal Room.

Influential people in the world of politics and show business more than once became guests of a chic restaurant. So, John Lennon, who lived with Yoko Ono near Central Park, several times celebrated his birthday in it. For the same purpose, she was rented in 1990-e years and Hillary Clinton, the spouse of the then US President Bill Clinton.

However, at the beginning of 2000's, the former glory of the Tavern began to fade. Business declined, which led to the fact that in 2009, the restaurant had to be closed. Its owners have gone bankrupt.

The building in which the establishment was located belongs to the city. For some time it housed an information and tourist center. Finally, in 2020, well-known Philadelphia restaurateurs Jim Caiola and David Salama entered into a 20-year lease agreement with the city administration for the building.

The new owners of Tavern on the Green completely redesigned the restaurant, but retained the name and the original Gothic facades of the second half of the 19 century.

The restaurant has hundreds of tables located both inside the building and in the garden. In the spring and summer months more than two hundred employees will work in the establishment: cooks, waiters, bartenders and administrative staff.

In April and early May, Tavern on the Green will offer only a menu for dinner, and from mid-May it will also open for lunch and breakfast.

It is expected that the new restaurant will be more accessible and democratic, but will not lose its old charm and special chic. You'll have to pay $54 for a steak at the newly opened Tavern, and about $18 for a hamburger.
