The first death sentence of this year was passed in Belarus

The Bobruisk court in Belarus issued a death sentence to Alexander Osipovich - he was found guilty of double murder with particular cruelty, reports Belarusian service of Radio Liberty.

“By the court’s verdict, the accused was found guilty of the intentional unlawful deprivation of life (murder) of two persons, committed with particular cruelty, and he was given an exceptional penalty – the death penalty [by] shooting,” the press service said in a statement.

The prosecutor Olga Ivanova insisted on the death penalty. In her opinion, Osipovich cannot be in a colony, since he has repeatedly attempted on the health and lives of citizens.

The accused stated that he would appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court. He said he would rely on himself and apologized to his relatives and the country.

The mother of one of those killed, Nina Klimova, at the end of the trial, told reporters that she did not believe in Osipovich’s repentance, and was satisfied with the verdict.

On the night of July 20, two residents of Bobruisk in one of the institutions of the city met 36-year-old Alexander Osipovich. Later, the three of them went by taxi to his home.

At 7 in the morning, one of the women called the police asking for help. According to the prosecution, the girl said that she and her friend had closed in the bathroom, and the man threatened them with murder. She could not give the exact address. Later women were found killed. As the investigation established, the owner of the apartment dealt them numerous blows with his hands, a knife and a hammer.

By the time of the murder Osipovich was convicted four times and spent in 11,5 colonies for years. Previously, he was convicted of hooliganism, grievous bodily harm and robbery.

Osipovich admitted his guilt in the murder of two women. But he claimed that he did not remember “70 percent” of what happened to him on the morning of July 20. After the murder, the man cleaned the apartment and threw his victims' belongings into a garbage can. The investigation concluded that the accused stripped the murdered women in order to dismember them and dispose of the bodies. Osipovich did not agree with this.

Belarus is the only country in Europe and the former Soviet Union where the death penalty is preserved. Many human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized Minsk for this and called for the abolition of capital punishment.
