4 Russian bombers intercepted off the coast of Alaska
On February 13, two American F-16 combat aircraft intercepted four Russian aircraft near Alaska, including Tu-95 bombers and Su-35 fighters, reports CBS.
“The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter US or Canadian sovereign airspace,” the US-Canadian Joint North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement. Such Russian activities “occur regularly and are not seen as a threat or provocation.”
An Air Defense Identification Zone, or ADIZ, is a perimeter in which air traffic is controlled outside of national airspace to provide additional response time in the event of hostile activity.

US warplanes stationed in North America engaged in a rare offensive this month, shooting down a suspected Chinese spy balloon and three unidentified objects. U.S. officials said on Feb. 14 that intelligence officials were tracking a downed spy balloon that took off from China's south coast.
"NORAD has also assessed that this Russian overflight activity is in no way related to recent NORAD and US Northern Command operations involving aerial targets over North America over the past two weeks," the command said.
Intercepts of Russian aircraft in the area, which is located near the Far Eastern border of Russia, occur relatively often.

In October, US F-16 warplanes intercepted two Russian bombers in international airspace near Alaska, and in September, NORAD said it had spotted two Russian patrol planes.
NORAD says it uses a "layered defense network" of satellites, ground and airborne radars and fighter aircraft to track and identify aircraft. NORAD in Alaska can detect "what's going on in and around North American airspace 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
