Brain and spinal injuries: a boy from Los Angeles remained crippled after a fight at school

A California resident filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles school district alleging that her 12-year-old son suffered chronic brain and spinal injuries after another student attacked him with fists in 2018.

According to the woman, her son, a sixth grade student, was “severely beaten and strangled” in January last year by an 14-year-old boy who allegedly abused other school students, writes USA Today.

The woman, who asked reporters to call her only Sarah, also claims that school officials knew about the aggressive behavior of the 14-year-old student before the attack on her son, and that the school “did not take adequate action to protect the students.”

The attack was recorded by surveillance cameras Animo Westside Charter Middle School. The video shows how a bully hits an 12-year-old teenager in the stomach and pushes him against the wall. He then puts his hand on the boy’s neck before a crowd of other students gather around them.

Another record shows that the injured boy was taken to one of the offices in the school building and laid on the floor until the paramedics arrived.

Although the boy had cramps, the school did not call 911 until his mother arrived, approximately 30 minutes after the incident.

Sarah claims that the school staff did not immediately tell her what happened, and that she learned about the incident from other students.

“My son was lying there with black and blue bruises,” Sarah said, noting that he received no help.

According to her, her son suffers from health problems after beating, doctors said that he received irreversible injuries to the brain and spinal cord.

The woman’s lawyer, Ben Meiselas, said school staff had not handled the situation properly.

“The staff got it wrong at every turn and showed a callous disregard for the life and well-being of my 12 year old boy. This is unacceptable and every adult who works at this school should pay for his behavior for the rest of his life,” Meiselas said.
