Trump imposed steel and aluminum import duties

President Donald Trump signed a decree introducing tariffs for the import of steel and aluminum into the United States from all countries except Canada and Mexico, with which Washington is negotiating to revise the terms of the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA), writes RBC.

Trump introduced the 25% duty on steel imports and 10% on aluminum imports. Customs tariffs will take effect in 15 days.

"A country that does not protect its welfare at home will not be able to protect its interests abroad," Trump said in the White House.

American industry, according to Trump, "was devastated by aggressive" foreign trade practices that other countries practice.

He noted that the United States remains open to tariff changes and is even ready to cancel them for individual states. At the same time, Washington will bear in mind relations between countries, including the military.

For Canada and Mexico, an 30-day postponement of duties was introduced, Trump noted that if countries manage to agree on new terms for extending NAFTA, steel and aluminum tariffs for Canada and Mexico will not be introduced. Otherwise, Trump promised to quit NAFTA.

Ранее Bloomberg noted that Trump's decision may result to retaliate by China, which occupies a leading position in the world in the production of steel and aluminum. In this case, Beijing could limit the import of soybeans from the United States, which could adversely affect Trump’s support in agricultural states.
