The United States intends to impose sanctions against Russia every two months.
The US administration plans to tighten unilateral sanctions against Russia related to the conflict in the Donbass, every few months.
With such a statement, as writes TASS, on Thursday, US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Walker spoke.
“The second thing we've done is we're trying to increase the pressure we put on Russia to negotiate a settlement [to the conflict in eastern Ukraine]. This includes the continuation of US sanctions, as well as periodic tightening of those sanctions over time. This is the track the Trump administration is following, and we will continue to follow it. You will see additional sanctions coming into force every month or two or so, as we have already seen [in the past],” the diplomat said, speaking at a seminar at the Atlantic Council in Washington.
“In a similar way, we work with European allies, and the Europeans also keep [their own] sanctions in place. I think this probably came as a surprise to Russia. The European Union has shown tremendous resilience in keeping them in place,” Volcker added.
In addition, he argues that the chances of resolving the conflict in the east of Ukraine have only recently decreased due to the fault of Russia.
“In my assessment, the chances of them [the Russian authorities] changing their position are currently lower than even a year ago. It seems to me that Russia has essentially decided to wait out the Ukrainian elections, see what happens [after them], perhaps new favorable opportunities will arise in order to achieve a more favorable position for Russia,” the diplomat said.
According to him, Ukrainians “have no illusions about regaining by force control over the territory they have lost. “Such an attempt would be a disaster for Ukraine,” Volker added.
