US and Pakistan set new targets for bilateral cooperation
US Secretary of State John Kerry praised the progress made by the Pakistani military in the fight against militants in the northwest of the country.
His statement was made in Islamabad, where representatives of the United States and Pakistan in the course of a strategic dialogue discuss common goals in the field of trade, economic development and the fight against terrorism.
Sitting opposite each other in a large hall surrounded by advisers, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Pakistani National Security Adviser Sartaj Aziz analyzed the achievements of the two countries as a result of cooperation in five areas: energy, stimulating economic growth, normalizing the life of the population, education and health.
They also announced the creation of a sixth working group to deal with science and technology.
Kerry said that since the last strategic dialogue, the US and Pakistan have focused on expanding bilateral investment and trade.
“The annual volume of bilateral trade has already exceeded five billion, and today the US is the largest market for Pakistani exports,” said Kerry.
The secretary added that the US-Pakistani partnership should reflect the "interconnectedness" of the region, which should mean finding ways for Pakistan to work with India and working together to support security and stability in Afghanistan.
“The recent visit to Kabul by two senior Pakistani military officials and their chief of intelligence is a very encouraging sign and, I hope, heralds a new era in Afghan-Pakistani relations,” Kerry added.
Later, during a joint press conference with Kerry, Aziz said that Pakistan wants to maintain peaceful relations with its neighbors - both on the eastern and western borders of the country.
During the negotiations within the framework of the strategic dialogue, he also noted that the United States and Pakistan agreed that peace and stability in Afghanistan is a prerequisite for stability in Pakistan and the region.
