On the introduction of a special measure to combat the spread of "fake" news among Facebook users, the company reported on January 20. The company’s statement says that it’s not possible to completely clear Facebook of deliberately false messages, but fewer people will see them (notes about fake news will take into account the site’s algorithm, which determines how widely the post is presented in users ’news feeds).

Facebook emphasizes that humorous news, despite the fact that they contain false information, will not fall under the action of the new mechanism. Thus, sites such as The Onion, specializing in fake news, will appear in the news feeds of users without restrictions. According to Reuters, according to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2013, about 30% of the US population learn news from their news feeds on Facebook.

Facebook itself often turns out to be a “victim” of deliberately false news - so, in September of 2014, social network users actively discussed the news that social network accounts would be paid.
