A school in New York commemorates the victims of violence in Gaza; parents are outraged
Pupils of the elite Beacon School in New York 15 were asked to suspend the learning process for a minute to commemorate the victims of the violence in Gaza, where the Israeli soldiers killed more than 60 Palestinians trying to cross the Gaza-Israel border the day before.
This decision of the school administration stunned some students and angered parents, who believe that schoolchildren are being drawn into a Palestinian-Israeli conflict, on the anti-Israeli side, writes The New York Post.
"I'm very upset because I didn't send my child to public school in New York to pray for Hamas militants," said the Jewish father of one of the students.
Clashes on the border of Gaza and Israel occurred on May 14, on the opening day of the US embassy in Jerusalem. Attempts to break through the border and armed provocations by the Palestinians, the Israeli military responded with fire to the defeat. As a result, 62 people died, according to the Hamas leader, 50 of them belonged to this radical Islamic group, and the rest were “from the people”. The United States supported the actions of Israel and blamed Hamas for the deaths, which provoked a harsh response from the Israeli army.
“I don't think any school should encourage a minute's silence in memory of terrorists. What if they were ISIS fighters? No school would make such a public statement,” said the mother of one of the students, who is Jewish.
The Zionist Organization of America announced its intention to send in Beacon school letter demanding to apologize.
“It is shameful to mourn the death of Hamas terrorists,” said Morton Klein, the organization’s president.
School principal Ruth Lacy didn’t respond to a request as to whether she authorized the announcement of a minute of silence on a school loudspeaker that was made by one of the students.
According to the students, minutes of silence in this institution are held very rarely. They honored the memory of the victims of the massacre at the secondary school in Parkelende, when 17 people were killed due to the shooter’s actions, in addition, protests against violence in schools were also held in this establishment.
“I'm Jewish, and I saw that a lot of my Jewish friends felt very strange when the minute of silence began,” said school student Sophie Steinberg.
According to her, they did not know how to behave and how to fit into what was happening at school.
According to another student, the announcement of a minute of silence appeared “from nowhere”, and she would like to have a wider discussion of such decisions before their implementation.
Some parents say they have asked the director to clarify the situation, but she has not responded yet.
