Retail chain JC Penney has announced the closure of another 24 store in the US this year in an attempt to offset sales losses.

The retailer will close 15's main stores and 9 homeware and furniture stores, in addition to the three other stores that the company announced it closed earlier in the year 2019. A JC Penney spokesman declined to say exactly which outlets will be closed in the second quarter of 2018.

Employees who were dismissed because of the closures, according to a company representative, will receive assistance in finding another job, writing a resume and preparing for an interview.

The decision to close was made after the slow season of holiday sales. In the fourth quarter of 2018, retailer sales declined by 4% compared to the same period of 2017, and the total sales decline for the year was 3,1%.

The company aims to achieve its first profitable year since 2010, but it needs to recover from the many store closures and sales decline. JC Penney closed eight chain stores in 2018 and 138 in 2017, last year the retailer cut more than 2200 jobs.

It is unclear how many workers will be affected by the closure of JC Penney stores this year, but the company says it will help laid-off workers to move to new jobs.
