US Senate voted to expand sanctions against Russia

14 June The US Senate overwhelmingly supported the introduction of new sanctions against Russia in response to the country's intervention in the US presidential election in 2016.

Also in the adopted document there is a provision according to which US President Donald Trump will need to get Congress approval, if he decides to weaken any existing sanctions, reports “Voice of America".

Previously, the issue of sanctions was resolved by issuing presidential decrees; now this process is under the control of Congress.

97 senators voted “for” this decision and only two voted “against”. The adopted document aims to punish Russia for interfering in the American elections, annexing the Ukrainian Crimea and supporting the Syrian government in the civil war, which has been going on for 6 years.

These changes were taken against the background of trump's accusations of ties with Russia and ostensibly his desire to weaken the sanctions against this country.

In order to give the Senate document the force of law, it is necessary that it be approved by the House of Representatives and signed by President Trump. If Trump is against this measure, then the congressmen who are in support of the law are expected to have enough support in both houses of Congress to reject the presidential veto.
