Russians hide behind their LGBT status to emigrate - Russian officials

Russian Human Rights Ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova told Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) Thorbjørn Jagland about the statement that some gay people use their status to simplify immigration to the West. She said this TASS on the sidelines of the interregional forum “The Arctic - a special level of human rights”, which takes place in Arkhangelsk.
“I reported this at a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, that I have such a statement, and attention should be paid to it. This, apparently, is the only tool that I can use to draw the attention of the West to this, so that, firstly, there is no corruption component, and secondly, so that false information about the oppression of people of non-traditional orientation is not used,” - she said.
The official said that she had received an appeal from one famous person with a non-traditional orientation, who wrote that “a number of citizens use this, one might say, status in order to receive financial assistance to travel abroad.” “Since, as the applicant claims, this world knows each other, among these people there are those who were not gay, but took advantage of the opportunity to receive financial assistance and go abroad,” she explained.
The Ombudsman clarified that she has certain data. “And I will probably be forced to check it so that everything is objective,” she noted.
Recall, in early April, "Novaya Gazeta" опубликовала an investigation into the mass detentions and torture of residents of Chechnya. It said that in the republic in recent weeks, more than a hundred men were suspected of being suspected of homosexual relationships. Later, the publication published the names of 27 people who, according to the newspaper’s journalists, after being detained by Chechen authorities, were shot on the night of January 26.
Chechen officials and local clergymen reacted extremely sharply to these reports. Thus, a spokesman for the head of Chechnya, Alvi Karimov, said that the investigation of Novaya Gazeta was “an absolute lie”. According to him, “it is impossible to detain and oppress someone who simply does not exist in the republic”.
In May, two residents of Chechnya, who were forced to leave the republic after persecution because of their homosexuality, received asylum in Lithuania, and more than 30 - in Canada.
