Russian tennis player Daniel Medvedev was disqualified for racism in the American Challenger Series tournament in Savannah, Georgia.
The second round match between Medvedev and American Donald Young was stopped when the 4: 1 score was in favor of the American. In the fifth game of the 20-year-old Russian was a break-point, which he realized. The line judge fixed the ball in line, after which the black Young began to protest. The chief arbiter came down from the tower, a dark-skinned woman who, after a long dialogue with Young, recorded an out.
Medvedev expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of a black judge and said: “I think you are friends with him,” meaning Young.
At this point, the supervisor went down to the court and decided to disqualify Medvedev. It is assumed that in addition to the phrase about friendship, something more rude was said that was not recorded by the cameras, but was heard by the chief arbiter.
Daniil Medvedev currently ranks 260 in the ranking.
