Poroshenko signed a law on Ukraine’s renunciation of the term “Great Patriotic War”
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed the law “On the perpetuation of the victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945”, according to which the concept of “Great Patriotic War” is replaced by the term “Second World War”. The text of the relevant law was published on the website of the head of the Ukrainian state.
The document recognizes the law of Ukraine “On the perpetuation of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” as no longer in force and calls May 9 “the Day of Victory over Nazism in the Second World War.”
The law also proposes to use the term “World War II” and abandon the term “Great Patriotic War”. When honoring the memory of those who fell during the Second World War, according to the law, the use of Soviet symbols is also abolished.
In addition, the activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists - Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN-UPA) in Ukraine are recognized as a struggle for the country's independence. The corresponding law was signed by the country's President Petro Poroshenko, his press service reports.
“The law provides for state recognition of the struggle for the independence of Ukraine in the twentieth century and determines the legal status of participants in the struggle for the independence of Ukraine in the twentieth century,” says the explanatory note to the document.
