Delta passenger was mistaken for a trafficking victim and detained at the airport
26-year-old Stephanie Ung was returning to Atlanta, Georgia, after a vacation in Mexico, but the airline’s flight crew Deltashe flew, took her and her friend for the victims of trafficking, which led to many hours of interrogation of a woman at the airport by the Immigration and Customs Control, reports NBC News.
The woman did not understand what exactly was the reason for the detention and why she was not released for so long.
“I told them I just wanted to go home for family Thanksgiving dinner and that they were making me late, but they didn’t care,” Ung said.
She added that being late for a gala dinner with her family made her very upset.
Ung is Asian American and believes her race played a role in the incident.
“I know that human trafficking is huge in the Asian community and that is the only reason I think I was detained. Another factor could have been the fact that I was wearing a dress. I wore a dress with a cardigan and boots, and I think it's quite an appropriate outfit for a plane ride,” Ung said.
She added that her friend was also of Asian origin, and other passengers might have mistaken them for "two little girls on the plane."
Representative Delta He said that the concern began because of the suspicion of one of the passengers of the crew that the women’s passports were held by a third person flying in an airplane, which is often done with human trafficking. The passenger reported his concern to the crew, and they had already warned the officers at the airport, who detained the women upon arrival in Atlanta.
Despite the fact that at the beginning of the interrogation the woman stated that her passport was with her during the trip, the officers detained her for several hours.
From 2011 to airline Delta conducts courses among his flight attendants, teaching them to identify possible cases of human trafficking.
The airline noted that, despite the mistake, they are grateful to the flight attendant for vigilance, because the company is very serious about the problem of human trafficking.
According to federal authorities, Atlanta remains one of the largest centers of sexual exploitation and trafficking in the United States.
