Parliament of Ukraine voted to break the treaty of friendship with Russia

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted to terminate the friendship agreement with the Russian Federation.

The bill, which was introduced to parliament by President Petro Poroshenko, supported the deputies ’277 (with the necessary minimum of votes in the 226), twenty opposed, writes“Voice of America".

At the same time, the agreement will not terminate immediately, but with 1 on April 2019 of the year, in accordance with the deadlines set for the withdrawal from the contract unilaterally.

Poroshenko emphasized earlier that this is not about breaking the agreement, but about the fact that Kiev refuses to renew it. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin stated at the end of November that diplomatic relations with Russia would not be severed. According to Klimkin, they have exhausted themselves and are a formality, but allow consular services to provide assistance to Ukrainians who are in Russia.

The current Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia (the so-called “Big Treaty”) was signed in Kiev on May 31 on 1997 by Russian Presidents Boris Yeltsin and Ukraine Leonid Kuchma and ratified on 1998 in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the State Duma of Russia.

The document was signed on 10 years with the subsequent automatic prolongation of the document, if the parties do not speak out against it.

Article 40 of the Treaty emphasizes that it “is concluded for a period of ten years. Its action will then be automatically extended for subsequent ten-year periods if none of the High Contracting Parties declares to the other High Contracting Party that they wish to terminate it by written notice at least six months before the end of the next ten-year period. ”

We will remind that earlier in Ukraine, martial law was declared for a period of one month and men from Russia between the ages of 16 and 60 were banned from entering the country.

Decision on martial law received in connection with the act of aggression of Russia against Ukraine in the Kerch Strait. As a result of the illegal actions of the Russian security forces 25 November were captured three ships of the Ukrainian Navy and 24 captured Ukrainian soldiers. The Russians claim that the ships of the Ukrainian Navy invaded the "territorial waters of the Russian Federation." Ukrainians taken into custody until January 25 2019.
