“Caution: Causes Cancer”: Coffee sold in California is required to have a warning on it.

The non-profit group in Los Angeles wants coffee makers, distributors and retailers to publish ominous warnings about the cancer-causing chemical in every drink, and present evidence in a Los Angeles courtroom.

According to Daily Mail, in the center of the dispute is acrylamide, a carcinogen found in cooked foods, such as french fries, and which is also a natural by-product of the coffee roasting process.

The lawsuit alleges that Starbucks and about 90 other companies, including grocery stores and retail stores, did not comply with state law requiring warning signs about hazardous chemicals found everywhere, from household products to jobs.

The coffee industry has recognized the presence of a chemical, but claims it is at a safe level, and the benefits of drinking coffee are much greater.

An attorney for the nonprofit group said the main goal is to encourage the industry to remove the chemical from coffee, which would also benefit people who drink three cups a day.

“I’m addicted—like two-thirds of the population,” said lawyer Rafael Metzger. “I wish the industry would remove acrylamide from coffee so my addiction doesn’t force me to drink it.”

Acrylamide has previously been the cause of litigation. As a result, the court decided to pay 3 million and remove acrylamide from its products.
