Obama made changes to the decree on paid sick leave

Barack Obama has often said that he would use the “power of the pen” to benefit Americans. So, on Thursday, the President made changes, and the Labor Department published final rules for providing paid sick leave.

According to the decree, the state will guarantee some paid sick workers who work on state contracts. This rule is aimed at improving the working standards of workers with low wages.

According to him, companies that have contracts with the federal government, starting in 2017, must allow contractors to take up to 7 sick days a year. Workers receive 1 hour of paid leave for every 30 working days and no more than 56 hours per year. Workers must be notified each pay period of how much paid leave they have received.

Workers can use this time to take care of themselves or their loved ones, not only in the case of physical illness or injury, but also in psychological illness, domestic violence and other situations.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than a third of private sector employees do not receive any paid sick days.

Since some employers still do not offer paid vacation voluntarily, the Obama administration and many other state and local governments decided to start doing it for them. White House regulations are becoming the only way to protect low-income workers and provide the same protection as high-paid colleagues.

But opponents of the new rules said that firms would cheat and cut working hours if they were forced to provide paid sick leave.
