Republican senators Orrin Hatch and Jeff Flake submitted a bill on Thursday to increase the annual H-1B visa quota from 65 000 to 85 000 people.
In addition, the Immigration Innovation Act or I-squared Work permits will also be granted for spouses and children of H-1B visa holders. Recall that in December the White House proposed to abolish the right of H-1B spouse holders to work in the USA.
The bill also proposes to remove the existing limit in 20 000 additional H-1B visas reserved for those who have a master's degree.
“Senator Hatch believes that in the current political climate, this effort represents an ideal step in bringing Republicans and Democrats together to address the flaws in our immigration system,” Senator Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said in a statement.
Technological giants such as Execs from Microsoft and Facebookas well as industry associations made statements in support of the bill.
