New US ambassador to Russia: “Restoring Ukraine’s sovereignty is key”

The new US ambassador to Russia, John Huntsman, said that the restoration of the sovereignty of Ukraine throughout its territory will become a key issue in the relations between Washington and Moscow after he assumes his duties.

He added that he wants to improve relations with Russia, but the first step should be the return by Moscow of control over the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, reports “Radio Liberty".

According to him, this is a problem in Moscow’s relations not only with the United States, but also with the EU, Canada and practically any other developed country in the world.

Huntsman also added that he wants to work together with Russia to overcome the crisis over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. He called Pyongyang a threat to Russia and the rest of the world, and not just to the United States.

“By working together, the United States and Russia can force the North Korean regime to come to the negotiating table and find a diplomatic solution,” he said.

Huntsman also did not rule out possible cooperation with Russia in the fight against the terrorist organization “Islamic State” and in ending the war in Syria.

After 3 handed over credentials to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Huntsman visited his home state of Utah for the ambassador’s swearing ceremony, where he made statements regarding his plans for the post of head of the US diplomatic mission in Russia.

Recall Russia occupied Crimea in 2014 year, and also provides support to terrorists in the east of Ukraine. In order to annex the Crimea to the territory of Russia, Moscow organized a pseudo-referendum there, forcing people to vote at gunpoint. The international community did not recognize this referendum and its results.

The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia for actions in Ukraine.
