Fraudster impersonating immigration lawyer sentenced to 5 years in prison

Founder and owner of the immigration firm Coalición Latinoamericana Internacional (CLI) in Los Angeles, Osvaldo Rafael Cabrera was sentenced to 5 years and 2 months of imprisonment on charges of theft, false testimony and conspiracy to violate immigration law.
An 48-year-old male was originally charged in December 2016 of the year on 22 clauses, including theft and conspiracy to violate immigration law, reports Customs and Immigration Service.
His wife, Maria Marcelina Rodas, who was also involved in the conspiracy, was sentenced to 3 years by probation.
After the case was completed in December 2016, several other injured men appealed to the State Attorney’s Office, and on February 14, the General Prosecutor’s Office filed an additional lawsuit on the 36 charges.
The investigation found out that Cabrera, not having an attorney license and accreditation, often pretended to be an immigration lawyer and provided legal advice and services for which he charged clients up to $ 9 thousand. To do this, he used predominantly Hispanic media resources, which described his successes as an immigration lawyer.
The man has repeatedly misled his clients about the real state of their affairs, misinformed them about the rights to receive immigration benefits and made out immigration forms in an inappropriate manner, while demanding significant payment for their services. Cabrera also ignored or lied to victims who tried to get their money back. In some cases, improper completion of immigration documents by Cabrera had irreparable consequences, leading to the deportation of family members of some of his clients.
