Passenger elevator collapsed from the 95-th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago

In the fourth largest building in Chicago, six people were trapped in a three-hour elevator after he collapsed from the 95 floor.

According to the CBS Chicago edition, the problem turned out to be a cable lift that broke off after passengers got into the elevator on the 95 floor of the 875 North Michigan Avenue skyscraper, formerly known as the John Hancock Center.

"At first I thought we were going to die," Jaime Montemayor, a visitor from Mexico who was there with his wife Mana Castillo, told CBS. “We were going down and then I felt us going down and then I heard banging and pop after pop.”

Mana Castillo noted that none of the passengers knew how low they had fallen until they were rescued.

In addition to tourists, three more students and a pregnant woman turned out to be hostages.

Salvation took about three hours, since the cabin was in the "blind" zone.

The building located at: 875 North Michigan Avenue, ironically, boasts security features such as a “computerized monitoring system” to track any emergency. However, rescuers had to knock the wall.

"We don't like to knock out walls," said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. “The only alternative way to get to the elevator would be to use the ropes from the 97th floor, which is unsafe.” We don't go down like Batman, so we had to go through the wall."

875 North Michigan Avenue, (abbreviated as JHC, up to 2018, John Hancock Center) - 100-storey skyscraper in Chicago. The main feature of the skyscraper is its hollow construction, resembling a large quadrangular column. As of July, 2015 is 7 in height in the USA and 37 in the world. In 1999, the building received an award from the American Institute of Architecture.
