Blood from the eyes and ears: an 32 person was hospitalized in Illinois due to a synthetic drug

Health workers have issued a warning about artificial cannabis in Illinois, the use of which has caused people to bleed heavily.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported on Friday that over the past few weeks, an 32 person has been in an emergency room with heavy bleeding after using a synthetic cannabinoid product.

The department also published a geographical breakdown, presenting eight cases in Chicago: four in Cook County and one each in Will, Dupage, Kane and Macklin counties.

Most of the victims were in the Chicago area, but health officials warned that similar products could also be distributed elsewhere throughout the state, said department spokeswoman Melanie Arnold.

The Ministry of Health reported on Thursday that symptoms include bleeding from the eyes and ears. On Friday, officials found that those who suffered in Illinois reported other symptoms, such as coughing up blood, blood in the urine, nosebleeds, bleeding gums.

Although synthetic cannabis has long been considered dangerous, heavy bleeding is not a known side effect, said Dr. Melissa Millevich, an emergency doctor in Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital Downers Grove.

Despite the statewide ban, Arnold said that manufacturers can slightly modify the molecular composition of products as a way to "circumvent" the law, allowing them to sell legally.

Health officials reported that a person’s 32 who experienced similar symptoms of March 7 is being supervised. So far, deaths have not been reported.

An artificial drug is a mixture of hundreds of chemicals, often called cannabinoids, because they affect the same brain cell receptors as the main ingredient in marijuana.

Cannabinoids are sometimes sprayed on plant-based smoking materials or sold as liquids that must be evaporated and inhaled from e-cigarettes and other devices, according to a warning from the medical department.

Recent patient reports of severe bleeding have led public health officials to warn the public not to use any synthetic cannabinoid products.

A study of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention turned to those who use these drugs and experienced bleeding, with a recommendation to call 911 or come to the emergency room.
