Kerry supported Russia's initiative on Syria
US Secretary of State John Kerry supported the UN efforts to end the clashes in the Syrian city of Aleppo, as well as Russia's initiative to resume peace negotiations in Syria.
Kerry made this statement on Wednesday in Geneva after meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.
Russia expressed its readiness in late January to hold talks between representatives of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and opposition groups that are trying to remove him from power.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry expressed its readiness to participate in the negotiations, but dialogue in the context of the existence of numerous opposition groups remains a serious problem.
Kerry expressed the hope that "Russian efforts can be useful."
Two rounds of peace negotiations held a year ago under UN mediation did not produce significant results, writes Voice of America.
