A few days before the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, US President Donald Trump said that he did not consider him to be either a friend or an enemy, writes “Voice of America".

“He is not my enemy. Is he a friend? Not. I don't know him well enough, but the couple of times when I happened to meet him, we got along well, ”Trump said.

The head of the White House stressed that he considers Putin a "competitor", and expressed the hope that "maybe one day he will become a friend."

“This can happen as long as I just don't know him very well,” said the head of the United States.

Trump and Putin will meet on July 16 in Helsinki. The American leader plans to discuss the issues of violations of the Treaty on the Elimination of Medium and Small-Range Missiles by Russia, as well as Russian interference in the US presidential election.

"We are going to this meeting without high expectations," - said Trump.

Answering the question of whether he can recognize Crimea as Russian, Trump said: “This is an interesting question. Long before I became president, President Obama allowed that to happen. It happened with him, and not with me. Would I allow it? Not. I would not let this happen. But he allowed it, so those were his intentions. People sigh “Ah, Crimea” all the time, but the fact is that they built bridges to the Crimea, they opened a large bridge, which they began to build many years ago. I believe they built a submarine port, invested billions of dollars. What will happen to the Crimea next? I can't tell you that. But I am not happy with the situation with the Crimea. ”

On the question of whether he intends to touch on this topic during the negotiations with Putin, Trump said: "We will see."
