Hollywood Jews support agreement with Iran
A group calling itself "American Jewish Supporters of Israel," made up of 98 prominent members of the Los Angeles Jewish community, mostly with ties to Hollywood, signed the letter, which will be published in full Thursday in the LA Jewish Journal.
Supporters dealings are calling on the US Congress to approve the agreement signed in Vienna, since it is “in the interests of the United States and Israel,” the Hollywood Reporter reports.
“We understand that many have reasonable concerns about the risks associated with comprehensive nuclear weapons development and an agreement with an unreliable adversary such as Iran,” the letter said. “We also share these concerns, but the agreement that was reached is not based on trust, it is based on strict checks and monitoring.”
The letter's signatories include billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad, architect Frank Gehry, television producer Norman Lear, Mad Max creator Matthew Weiner, film producers Lawrence Bender and Mike Medavoy, and Game of Thrones executive producer Caroline Strauss.
According to the authors of the letter, canceling the agreement would be a “tragic mistake.”
Last week, US Senator Charles Schumer (Democrat from New York State) announced that he would vote against the nuclear agreement. California Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman said he would follow suit.
September 17 congress will meet to approve or reject a deal from Iran. US President Barack Obama has the ability to veto any decision of the Congress, while the Congress has the opportunity to vote to override its veto.
