Experts from IHS Jane's found new Russian bases in Syria

Experts from IHS Jane's who specialize in military issues suspect Russia of building two more military bases in Syria, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Employees of the company viewed images of satellites purchased from the Airbus Group, saw large army tents and suggested that they indicate a Russian presence.

The images taken in mid-September also show military depots north of the port of Latakia. Russia is probably preparing to deploy troops in both places.

Official comment of the Russian Ministry of Defense about the possible construction of bases has not yet been reported.

Russia officially recognizes the presence in Syria of only one point of logistics in the port of Tartus. At the same time, unofficial sources at the Ministry of Defense admit that the Russian military also carried out repair work at the Latakia airport.

Earlier it was reported about the transfer of Russian fighters to Syria and that Russian drones began to make reconnaissance flights, thus starting a military operation.

Western countries negatively assess the possibility of the appearance of Russian troops in Syria. They fear that Russia will fight on the side of Bashar Assad against the opposition, which is supported by the United States.

At the same time, according to the Air Force, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that sending Russian combat aircraft to Syria seems to be more likely to protect its air base in this country and is not the beginning of an offensive campaign.

At the same time, there is still a third force in the civil war in Syria - the “Islamic State” (the organization is recognized as terrorist in Russia and is banned), which controls a significant part of the country's territory.
