Democrats withdraw proposals to build a wall on the border with Mexico

After the Senate resumed negotiations on the fate of young illegal immigrants, the so-called “Dreamers,” Democrats announced the withdrawal of their proposal to finance the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico, which is advocated by US President Donald Trump, writes “Voice of America«.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said he was withdrawing the proposal because Trump had allegedly failed to fulfill the main points of the agreement they were discussing last Friday.

Schumer’s statement came a day after government offices resumed full operation after partial closure due to congressional disputes on immigration matters.

"Therefore, we need to start on a new basis, and the proposal on the wall is not being discussed," Schumer told reporters. His assistant reported that the offer was withdrawn on Sunday.

Hispanic Congress caucus on Tuesday expressed fears that Republicans in the House of Representatives would push a hard immigration bill drafted by Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the judiciary committee.

The bill will allow “dreamers” to extend their legal status for three years, instead of allowing them to obtain citizenship.

It also provides for 10 to hire thousands of additional agents to guard the border, close some visa programs and take other steps to search for people who are in the country illegally.

It is worth noting that the government “shatdaun” and the temporary cessation of funding didn't affect for programs of the Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for which fees are charged. Offices of the department remained open, and immigration interviews were held according to a previously established schedule.

Recall that hundreds of thousands of US government employees on Monday didn't come out to work: on Saturday night, US government agencies stopped work after Republicans and Senate democrats could not agree in time to finance the work of the government.

The reason was disagreement on the issue of migration and the construction of the wall on the border with Mexico.
