New York Mayor Bill de Blasio signed 18 bills to protect tenants in the city.
New laws are aimed at protecting tenants from harassment from homeowners, including by simplifying the process for court tenants to harass their homeowners, as well as increasing fines and toughening other types of punishments for dangerous or illegal construction, York
“Tenant harassment is one of the most evil side effects of New York's economic boom. As we continue to work to protect renters, we will not hesitate to take action against unscrupulous landlords,” de Blasio said.
In particular, new bills expand the notion of harassment of tenants by homeowners, including calls at inconvenient times; increase the amount of compensation to tenants and fines for homeowners; toughen requirements for homeowners to obtain permits for renting housing (in particular, the license will be denied to people with a debt of more than $ 25 thousands); partly shifting the burden of proving their innocence in court to the landlord; allow tenants to sue the lessor for repeated disruption of the supply of basic services in the house.
Earlier in New York, a law to increase fund free legal assistance to tenantsfaced with forced evictions. They, as well as those who have been harassed or insulted by landlords, are offered to call 311 for free legal assistance.
