What is known about the links of the ex-head of the election headquarters of Trump with Ukrainian politicians

A few days before the court hearing in the US state of Virginia in the case of the ex-head of the election headquarters of Donald Trump Paul Manafort, the prosecution submitted several hundred pages of evidence against the political strategist to the court.

Some of them relate to his Ukrainian period of life (from 2005 to 2014), when he worked for the Party of Regions and the government of Viktor Yanukovych. The other part is financial documents showing how Manafort managed the funds received in these and other projects, writes Air force.

One of the important documents is a separate statement from investigators regarding emails Manafort sent to Ukrainian politicians, American colleagues and contractors. All of them are real, their authenticity has been proven and does not require additional examination - they were recovered by the office of special counsel Robert Mueller from the email accounts of Paul Manafort.

The BBC studied the evidence base collected by the office of the Special Prosecutor in the case of the political consultant.

Reform of the Party of Regions and recommendations for getting rid of Yanukovych

In the summer of 2005, a few months after the Orange Revolution, the Manafort team conducted an all-Ukrainian public opinion poll, the results and conclusions of which the political strategist wrote a report. The document was sent to the Ukrainian billionaire Rinat Akhmetov.

In his conclusions, Manafort at least a dozen times recommends that a businessman at any cost immediately get rid of Viktor Yanukovych, noting that the politician’s unpopularity rating is much higher than that of the Party of Regions, and any criticism from his mouth will not be heard because of his rejection of his personality as a whole and discredit his image during the events of the Orange Revolution.

Manafort's team was actively preparing for the press conference of Viktor Yanukovych on the 100 days of his presidency.

Among the expected questions were the following: his main achievements over this period, what he thinks about the attack on freedom of the press, the program of reforms and the reduction of subsidies for the population, the assessment of the work of the Azarov government and the possibility of dismissing ministers who do not like society.

The list of prepared questions also included tricky ones: are there any plans for events with the participation of the first lady, who last appeared in public during the inauguration? Suggested answer: “The presidency is an authoritative role, but the First Lady has even more authority.”

When asked about releasing his tax returns, Yanukovych had to respond: “This is a lengthy and much more complex process than I expected, but I intend to meet the standards of disclosure of information and hope to do this before the summer holidays.”

Among the questions that Manafort’s team has never found answers to are Yanukovych’s real estate in Mezhyhirya, the blocking of Kyiv streets due to the movement of his motorcade, as well as the possible cancellation of President Viktor Yushchenko’s decree awarding Stepan Bandera the title “Hero of Ukraine.” The list also included a question about the wreath that fell on Yanukovych while laying flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in May 2010.

Recommendations for communicating with Barack Obama during the 2010 Nuclear Summit of the Year

On April 9, 2010, Manafort wrote a letter to Viktor Yanukovych regarding his trip to Washington for the Nuclear Security Summit, outlining three key purposes for the trip. The main one is to establish personal relations with US President Barack Obama.

The political consultant draws attention to the fact that Yanukovych, unlike many other world leaders, will have a 30-minute meeting with the American president alone.

Manafort and his American contractor Ted Devine agreed on the amount of 40 thousand dollars monthly for the presidential campaign of 2010 of the year and a bonus if the campaign was successful in the amount of 40 thousand dollars, subject to a five-day trip to Ukraine.

Alternatively, Manafort could pay X-NUMX Divine-Malvey thousands of dollars for the work and 25 thousand dollars of the bonus if the campaign was successful, but without personal consultations on the Ukrainian territory.

Practical advice to the mayor of Kiev

As follows from the documents, Manafort could advise Vitali Klitschko both during his mayoral election campaign, and already as mayor. According to the plan of Manafort, two teams were to work in the metropolitan administration: the political consultant and the mayor himself.

Manafort also offered the following initiatives to the mayor of Kiev:

• 100 percent tax return on income paid in Kiev to the city budget;
• tighten fines for parking violation;
• subordinate the heads of regional administrations of the capital to the mayor;
• conduct an audit of utilities;
• release and repair the city hall building;
• move the city council to one of the office centers or place it in one of the district administrations.

In comments BBC News Ukraine Vitali Klitschko admitted that in 2014, the Manafort company did offer its consulting services.

Recall that October 30 2017 of the year Manafort voluntarily surrendered to the FBI after investigators charged him with a number of serious crimes: money laundering, tax evasion and ten more violations of the law, many of which, according to the prosecution, were committed in almost 10 years of cooperation with the former leadership of Ukraine.
