Will Obama take Twitter and Facebook accounts to the new president?

If you are subscribed to President Obama's accounts Twitter, Facebook or other social media platforms, you may be interested to know what will happen to these accounts after 20 January 2017, Obama leaves his post, and Donald Trump will be sworn in as the US 45.

“The beginning of the Obama administration’s reign fell on a period when many social networks were gaining popularity,” says Macon Phillips, who developed the digital strategy for the White House. (Phillips is currently coordinating the Bureau of International Information Programs of the US Department of State, managing the ShareAmerica website.)

Archiving tweets and presidential posts on Facebook is a completely new challenge for the White House.

In the United States, there is a long tradition of peaceful transfer of power and storage of presidential documentation. As for Obama's social media, the White House will adhere to this tradition.

“Current accounts with all their subscribers will be transferred to the new president, just like a car park or stationery,” explains Phillips. “The new administration should have unhindered access to these assets and will be able to use them as needed.”

20 in January to Twitter address @POTUS - along with its 11 millions of subscribers, but without tweets on the message feed - will be accessed by the following US President Donald Trump. As a publicly available twitter archive of outgoing President Barack Obama, the US National Archives and Records Administration will create a new account @POTUS44. There will be posted his tweets, as well as tweets sent to him personally. The same archives will store Obama account data in Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms.

“At all times, the communication between citizens and the president reflects their views and moods,” Phillips believes. “I think in 20 or 40 in years it will be very interesting to find out not only what President Obama was doing at any particular moment, but also what people were saying to him in this regard.”

As ForumDaily wrote earlier, the Republican candidate Donald Trump won the presidential election. Due to the victory in a large number of states, he received the most electoral votes - 290 vs. 232 for Clinton.

However, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is ahead of Trump in direct support of voters at the national level.

The electoral college will meet on December 19 for the formal election of the 45 president, and on January 6, Congress will approve its results. The inauguration of the new president is scheduled for January 20 2017.
