African American lawyer said that he had to endure because of his color
Lawyer Sean Lewis from Phoenix (Arizona), made a heartbreaking post on Facebook after it became known in early April that a black teenager was shot from a firearm and stopped near a house to ask for directions.
He said that African Americans regularly encounter racism in the United States, regardless of what they have achieved in life, writes Mirror.
14-year-old Brennan Walker missed the bus on his way to school in Michigan, so he stopped at 53-year-old Jeffrey Seigler to ask for help.
According to the teenager, having seen him, Zaygler ran out of the house and fired a shotgun at him, after which the guy managed to escape.
Lewis noted that this incident was one of many that confirms that black people in the United States are regularly forced to endure racism.
The lawyer admitted that he himself was afraid of taking the package he had mistakenly delivered to him from Amazon, because his white neighbors, to whom the package was intended, can misunderstand the situation and “start shooting”.
“This package has been near my home for several days. Why? Because we are black. ”
He said he was waiting for the delivery company to pick him up and send him to the correct address. Carrying it yourself or sending children with this task is very dangerous.
“It’s very dangerous to send our boys to the home of any family we don’t know in this predominantly white neighborhood. Why? Because there is a real chance that one of my neighbors will see my boy as a threat and call the police or even point a gun at him,” Lewis explained.
For this reason, the parcel will wait until the courier picks it up and transfers it to several houses further.
“I can’t be sure that my white neighbors won’t see me, a Harvard-educated lawyer, (or my high-achieving 14-year-old son) as a murderous maniac. This is what it means to be black in America “after the end of racism,” the lawyer emphasized.
Opinions of commentators of his post were divided: some sympathized with such a plight, others accused the author of exaggeration and incitement of racial contradictions, but most commentators in both camps said that a lawyer should find a way to transfer the parcel from Amazon to your neighbor.
However, despite the fact that more than 15 000 comments were posted under the post, according to Lewis, “no one made a single proposal on how to eradicate the white people’s irrational fear of the black people living in their neighborhoods”.
