Hellish vacation ended with the death of a child and a medical bill in $ 20 000

It all started as a perfect Caribbean holiday for a happy family waiting to be replenished.

Chloe Sullivan, pregnant with her second child, her fiance, Michael Parrott and 4-year-old daughter Sullivan went on vacation to the Dominican Republic before the birth of the fourth family member.

But the vacation ended in tragedy when the child Sullivan got into trouble and died, and the grieving family from Kent, England was not allowed to leave the island and return home until they paid almost $ 20 991,12, which they did not have.

The nightmare began late October 13 when Sullivan "noticed something unusual in the lower abdomen and talked to the midwife who advised her to go straight to the hospital," according to Parrott's cousin, Harry Cottama, who created the GoFundMe page for the family.

In the private hospital of the International Medical Group in Punta Cana, Sullivan and Parrotta said they had to pay to see the doctor, which they did.

The couple also told the hospital staff that in case of further treatment needed, their insurance company would not cover the costs and they would not be able to pay for it. At this point, Sullivan was sent to intensive care, where she gave birth to a boy, who was named Arlo.

The newborn was immediately taken to the ward for newborns, so parents could not see him.

Early in the morning of October 15, the doctors told the couple that Arlo had breathing problems and in the morning he died. And then the nightmare of the family began to get worse.

The couple wanted to take the baby’s body home to the UK, but the hospital “threatened to dispose of his body at its discretion if they could not pay ($ 5 100)”. The family was able to pay the bill thanks to Father Sullivan.

The hospital then refused to let the family go until it paid all medical bills, the amount of which was $ 20 991.12, despite the fact that the operation initially cost $ 11 000.

The couple reportedly offered to pay in installments, but the hospital refused. They were also not allowed to leave their room, which was under guard.

“Chloe's four-year-old daughter was with them the entire time, I can imagine how scared she was,” Cottam wrote on the GoFungMe page. “The hospital threatened to contact Interpol and said that if they did not hand over their passports, they would not be able to leave the hospital room.”

In the end, Sullivan agreed to give her passport to return to the hotel room.

It is reported that the British Embassy advised the spouses to pay the bill, because it could not intervene.

Fortunately, the page created by Kotta GofundMe collected the necessary money in just one day, which meant that the family would be able to pay the bill in full, pick up the Sullivan passport and go back home.

Sullivan thanked the people who donated the money.

“We just want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts, all of our friends, family and people we don't know who generously donated to enable us to get both my and Arlo's medical documents, my passport and the medicine I need to take on the flight,” she wrote.
