At a party in California there was a mass shooting: 10 people were killed, another 10 were injured

This mass shooting, the deadliest in the country since Uvalde (Texas), unleashed a wave of fear among Asian American communities in the region and darkened festivities across the country, reports KTLA.

January 22 called the name of the shooter. It turned out to be Huu Kang Tran, 72 years old.

Tran also tried but failed to break into the second ballroom later in the evening, authorities said.

The shooting began around 22:20 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, located at 122 W. Garvey Ave, in a predominantly Asian neighborhood a few miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Ten people - five women and five men - died at the scene, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said. Ten of the wounded were taken to hospitals in stable to critical condition. Seven of them remained hospitalized on the evening of January 22.

20 to 30 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting, Tran entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in the nearby Alhambra armed with a semi-automatic pistol to which was attached an elongated high-capacity magazine.

“I can tell you that the suspect went in there probably with the intention of killing more people, but two brave community members decided to step up and disarm him,” the sheriff said. “They were able to take the weapon from him, and the suspect fled.”

Hours of hunting for the shooter led the officers to a white van in Torrance, about 40 kilometers southwest of Monterey Park. Late in the morning of January 22, police in tactical vehicles and sapper trucks surrounded a van in a parking lot near Sepulveda Blvd. and Hawthorne Blvd.

Tran was found dead inside the vehicle. Police said he shot himself. The investigation is ongoing as detectives try to determine a motive.

The Monterey Park Celebration is one of the largest Chinese New Year events in Southern California. Two days of festivities were planned, but officials canceled the events due to the shooting. Other New Year's events have also been cancelled, including one at the USC Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena and another at Citadel malls.

California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the violence and visited the community on January 22 in the evening.

“Spent time in Monterey Park today meeting with local leaders and those affected by this terrible tragedy. The strength of this community is incredible,” Newsom tweeted. “No other country in the world suffers so much from such a constant stream of gun violence. We need real gun reform on a national level.”

US President Joe Biden ordered flags to be flown at half mast at all government buildings to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy.

The tragedy was the fifth mass shooting in the US since early 2023, and the deadliest shooting since May 24, 2022, when 21 people was killed at a school in Uwald, Texas.
