8 popular cat breeds hails from Russia
Russian blue - the most popular cat breed.
Legend has it that English sailors brought these beautiful gray cats with a blue tint from Arkhangelsk, a port city in northern Russia.
Siberian
This type of cat was first mentioned in 16th century sources. Then they were called Bukhara - due to the fact that they were brought to Russia from the large trading city of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Today this type of cat can be found throughout Russia, but for the first time it appeared in Siberia. As if in accordance with the local snowy and cold climate, the animals are covered with thick hair.
Don Sphynx
The history of the Don Sphynx (by analogy with the Canadian Sphynx) begins in February 1986 in the city of Rostov-on-Don. A local resident, Elena Kovaleva, was returning home and on the way rescued a tortured kitten who was bald from boys. However, soon the cat gave birth to bald kittens, which became the first Don sphinxes.
Kurilian Bobtail - a relative of the Japanese bobtail.
In Japan, they were once domesticated, but they retained the sharp claws of wild cats. Claws resemble fishing hooks, so that they climb trees, hunt birds, rodents and even fish.
Neva Masquerade
Long-haired cat with bright blue eyes. The name of the cat corresponds to its appearance. She looks like she wears a mask. The cat is a relative of the Siberian breed.
Peterbald (Petersburg Sphynx)
Cats of this breed have a very characteristic head shape: long and narrow, with a straight profile, almond-shaped eyes and large ears. The gene responsible for the lack of hair was inherited from the Don Sphynx, and the body shape was inherited from Siamese cats. The coat varies from bald to so-called "velor".
Ural Rex
The first mention of the cat Ural Rex with curly hair and living in the Urals can be found in the records of the pre-war era. After World War II, their population declined, and they have long been considered extinct. Although a few scraps of information about them came to us from the 1960's.
Mekong bobtail
The ancestors of the Mekong Bobtail were brought to Europe in 1884 from the capital of Siam (now Thailand). They arrived in America in 1890, and in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. But it was a Russian from St. Petersburg who proposed the cat standard for the Mekong Bobtail breed.
